Jeanie's Smoke Shop, Salt Lake City, Utah early Aug'09
Jeanie's Smoke Shop closed down this week because of new tax laws that made it too hard to continue in business. My Grandma (Jeanie) and Grandpa Klc purchased the store in 1949. It was then called United Smoke Shop. My Uncle Gary bought the store back in the 80's. I will sure miss being able to go in the store and visit my Grandma and Uncle Gary and those that worked there for years and years. I always have loved the sweet smell of the tobacco (before smoked of course) that permeated the store and all of the Christmas packages and cards that were sent across the country to us. Whenever we visited the store as children my grandma would always let us pick a candy. My favorite pick was a Big Hunk- a chewy taffy bar with bits of nuts in it. I had never seen any of those in New York- it was a treat. Second favorite pick was peanut brittle. I guess this is a good bye to a place that has been in the family way before I was born. Good bye Jeanie's.
